Tamil Nadu: 200 Units of Free Electricity Announced for Domestic Consumers in 2026
On May 10, 2026, Tamil Nadu's newly sworn-in Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay signed an order granting 200 units of free electricity per month to domestic consumers. The order was among the first official files signed by the new government following the swearing-in ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.
This is a significant announcement for Tamil Nadu households and, by extension, for anyone trying to estimate their TNEB electricity bill. Here is what we know so far.
What Was Announced
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay signed an official order for 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers on his first day in office. The order was signed in the presence of senior officials and cabinet ministers.
The announcement is part of the new government's stated welfare agenda. Alongside the electricity order, the CM also signed orders for a women's safety task force and an anti-drug task force.
What This Means for Your TNEB Bill
Under the current TNEB tariff (effective July 1, 2024), the first 100 units are free for all domestic consumers, regardless of total monthly consumption. Even if you consume 500 or 1,000 units in a month, the first 100 units remain at zero cost. What changes as consumption crosses thresholds is the rate applied to the units beyond 100, not the free slab itself.
How the Scheme Works: Government Order Details
The Tamil Nadu government has officially issued a Government Order (G.O.) confirming the full details of the scheme. The following is based on the G.O. as reported by The New Indian Express.
Who benefits:
TNEB bills domestic consumers on a bimonthly cycle (once every 2 months). The new scheme works on that same cycle:
- Consumers with bimonthly consumption of 500 units or less get the first 200 units free per billing cycle. This is the existing 100 free units plus an additional 100, bringing the free slab to 200.
- Consumers with bimonthly consumption above 500 units continue under the existing scheme with the first 100 units free.
What this means for your bill practically:
- If your 2-month usage is 500 units or less: you pay charges only from unit 201 onwards. At most, you pay for 300 chargeable units per billing cycle.
- If your 2-month usage exceeds 500 units: the existing tariff structure applies unchanged, with 100 units free as before.
Scale of the change:
- Of Tamil Nadu's 2.46 crore domestic consumers, approximately 2.23 crore (around 90%) consume less than 500 units bimonthly and will directly benefit from the revised free slab.
- The state government will bear an additional subsidy burden of Rs 1,730 crore annually.
- The scheme is effective immediately from the date of the order.
Until TNEB or TANGEDCO publishes the revised tariff slab rates for the 201-500 unit range under the new structure, we cannot update the calculator without risking inaccurate estimates.
See Your Savings in the Calculator
We have updated the TNEB Bill Calculator to show a side-by-side comparison of your bill under the previous tariff and the new 2026 tariff — for any consumption up to 500 units.
Enter your bimonthly units and the calculator will show you:
- Your bill under the previous tariff (July 1, 2024 rates)
- Your estimated bill under the new 2026 tariff (200 units free, charges from unit 201)
- Exactly how much you save under the new scheme
For example, if your household uses 325 units bimonthly, your previous bill would be ₹822.50. Under the new tariff, it drops to ₹587.50 — a saving of ₹235.

Note: The slab rates for units 201–500 under the new tariff are estimated based on the May 2026 Government Order. Official TNEB rates are pending notification. We will update the calculator once the revised tariff is officially published.
What to Expect Next
Once TNEB or TANGEDCO publishes an official gazette notification with the revised slab rates for 201–500 units, we will update the calculator with the confirmed figures. The savings shown currently are estimated but directionally accurate based on the G.O.
This article was first published on May 10, 2026 and last updated on May 12, 2026 to include details from the official Government Order. We will update the calculator once TNEB or TANGEDCO publishes the revised tariff slab rates. We are an independent utility tool and have no political affiliation.
